A Joe Walsh Time Line Biography


1969 - NOV. Walsh (b. Nov. 20, 1947 Wichita KS), having been raised in New Jersey and played clainet in junior high school, then rhythm guitar in the G-Clefts, a duo playing Ventures'
instrumentals, sujsequently joining the Beatles-styled the Nomads, has begun studying at Kent State Universtiy, OH in 1965 and now joins the campus band The Measles, who become local favorites.
When they split, Walsh is asked to join Clevland, Ohio based The James Gang to replace guitarist Glenn Schwartz, who left to play with Pacific Gas & Electric. The group comprising Walsh,
Tom Kriss on bass and vocals and Jim Fox on drums and vocals now makes #83 with Yer Album.


1970
Jan. Dale Peters replaces Kriss. May. The James Gang, having opened for the Who in Pittsburg, PA in 1969, is invited to support the band on its European tour.
{4} Walsh witnesses the killing of four student on the campus of Kent State, (In 1988, Walsh will campaign to erect a memorial for them)
Sept. Funk 49 peaks at #59 as The James Gang Rides Again reaches #20, earning a Gold Disc.


1971 June. Walk Away makes the US #51 as Thirds reaches the US #27 and earns another Gold Disc
Sept. Live James Gang Live in Concert enters the US chart, and becomes the group's third gold disc, reaching US #24


1972 Jan. Walsh quits The James Gang and, turning down and invitation from Steve Marriot to join Humble Pie, leaves industrial Cleveland for the open air of Boulder CO.
March. Walsh forms the Barnstorm trio with Kenny Passereli on bass and Joe Vitale on drums, signed to Dunhill Records.
Oct. The Bill Szymczyk-produced Barnstorm, recorded at Caribou Studios and created as a Joe Walsh solo, makes US #79
Nov. Keyboards player Rocke Grace joins as the group begins major US tour, much of it as a support act for Stephen Stills


1973 Feb. Compliation The Best of The James Gang featuring Joe Walsh makes US #79 April. Walsh movesd from Boulder to Studio City, Los Angeles, CA. June. Tom Stephenson replaces Rocke Grace as The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, including the Live favorite Rocky Mountian Way, is released, set to hit US #6 and earns
Walsh his first solo gold disc.
Oct. Rocky Mountain Way reaches US#23 and UK#39.
Dec. James Gang compliation 16 Greatest Hits featuring Joe walsh, peaks at US #181. Barnstorm splits after touring most of the year.


1974 Jan. Walsh solo Medows peaks at US #89. He will spend much of this year working on So What and also play on a session for the Eagles, BB King, Rod Stewart and Stephen Stills.
Feb. The James Gang has final hit at US #54 with Must Be Love.
Dec. Wlash has produced Dan Folgelberg's new released Souveniers.


1975 Jan. So What, including five tracks recorded with Barnstorm begins to rise to US #11, earning Walsh a second Gold Record.
March Turn To Stone at US #93.
June{21} Walsh plays at "Midsummer Maddness" at Wembley Stadium, Wembley, Middx, with the Beach Boys, The Eagles and Elton John.
Dec.{20} He replaces Bernie Leadon in The Eagles. He makes an early but enduring impression with a lengthy guitar lead ont the title cut for the fourthcoming Hotel California.


1976 April. Walsh's solo You Cant Argue with a Sick Mind reaches US #20 and UK #28. An EP combining ROcky Mountain Way with Turn TO Stone, Medows, Walk Away and the title track, will make
UK #39 in July the following year.


1978 June. Still an Eagle but newly signed to Asylum Records, he continues his solo career with the satirical, rock-lifestyle themed Life's Been Good, reaching US #12 and UK #14 as its parent album But Seriously Folks...,
produced by Szmczyk and his current band colleagues, hits US #8, earning Walsh his first Platinum disc, and reacjhes UK #16.
Nov. The Best OF Joe Walsh, including James Gang tracks, makes US #71


1979 Sept. Walsh announces he will run for President in 1980.


1980 July Walsh's All Night Long, from the sound track for John Travolta's starring movie "Urban Cowboy", reaches US #19.


1983 July, with the Eagles no longer active, Walsh's Life Of Illusion makes US #34 as he switches to the main Warner Bros. label for the Self produced US #20 There Goes The Neighborhood, which features Russ Kunkle,
David Lindley and Joe Vitale among top session players.


1983 July, Spaceage Whiz Kids makes US #52
Aug. You Bought it- You Name it makes US #48.
Producing Ringo Starrs OLd Wave the following year.
Walsh's The Confessor will peak at US #65 in July 1985


1987 Aug. Got any Gum? peaks at US #113
Sept.{19} Walsh participates in "Farm Aid II" benefit with John Cougar Mellencamp, Neil Young, Lou Reed and others at the University of Nebraska's Memorial Stadium, NE.


1990 Feb Walsh begins the new decade working as a DJ on New York's KROQ on Friday Nights. Nov. Walsh of ad-hoc outfit, The Best, an agression of John Entwhistle, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Keith Emerson, Simon Phillips and singer Rick Livingston, which plays at the Ykohama Arena, Yokohama, Japan.
Dec.{4} Walsh is featured playing guitar on School Days from The Simpson's Sing The Blues album.(During the year, Walsh reunites with The James Gang colleaguea, Jim Fox and Dale Peters for "The CLass of 1970" TV Special in Cleveland)


1991 May. Walsh releases Ordinary Aveerage Guy on the new Pyramid Record Label.
{19}He preforms two acousitc benefit concerts in his hometown, Witchita, to raise funds for the area's (illegible).
Aug. Walsh is featured on Bob Seger's Newly released The Fire Inside.
Nov. {23} He takes place in the "Rock Against Hunger" benefit at the Count Basie Theater, Red Bank, NJ, with Rick Derringer, Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes and others.


1992 March {14} A sometime member of Ringo Starr's All Star Band, Walsh, who recently issued Songs For A Dying Planet, performs solo at "Farm Aid V" where he is joined by Bonnie Bramlett.


1993 March {26} Walsh and fellow former-Eagle, Glenn Frey perform before a sellout crowd at the Sunrise Musical Theater, Sunrise, FL., on a twin billed US tour. While the solo retrospective Look What I Did: The Joe Walsh Anthology will be released the following year,
Walsh will recover with the reformed Eagles for a highly successful album and lengthy world tour, projects beginning in 1994.
